Nestled on the east bank of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, this cultural museum reimagines the city鈥檚 relationship with its waterfront. As the Mother River, it has long been a cradle of cultural and social life, deeply embedded in local history. However, in recent decades, relentless high-rise development has reshaped the riverfront, gradually neglecting the public space鈥檚 cultural significance. This project seeks to restore that lost connection by offering a new spatial experience through the urban landscape.
In contrast to Pudong鈥檚 ever-rising skyline, the museum embraces horizontality. This design strategy reframes the overwhelming scale of the surroundings into a more intimate, human-centered experience. The approach is twofold: first, through massing, the museum鈥檚 volume is broken into multiple sculptural forms that punctuate the waterfront, creating both a landmark and a dynamic public space. Second, through spatial organization, the museum seamlessly integrates with the existing riverside circulation, crafting an interior experience that is both expansive and intimate. Visitors meander through a dynamic interplay of indoor exhibitions and expansive outdoor views, fostering a dialogue between art, the river, and the urban landscape.
More than just a museum, it becomes a cultural anchor鈥攔evitalizing the enduring bond between the public and the waterfront, a relationship deeply rooted in the city鈥檚 history.
