The Fan House is a testament to the harmonious blend of modern functionality and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Commissioned by a Taiwanese-Hong Konger couple, the newly built multi-story home in an urban setting lacked inherent character. Our challenge was to infuse the space with personality, reflecting the homeowners' shared love for Japanese culture, nurtured during their time studying in Japan, while ensuring a contemporary, livable environment. The design narrative revolves around the concept of "A Friendly Home," symbolized by a custom-designed wall lamp in the entranceway featuring a golden fan. In Japanese culture, the fan represents prosperity and good fortune. The Chinese homophone for "fan" (扇) and "goodness" (善) further enriches the symbolism, embodying the homeowners' desire for a home filled with kindness and warmth. This central motif guided our material and spatial choices throughout the project. One of the most significant interventions was the creation of a serene Japanese garden on the ground floor. By recessing the back of the intended guest room/study, we carved out a tranquil courtyard. Large floor-to-ceiling windows blur the lines between inside and out, extending the living space visually and fostering a deep connection with nature. The clever use of varying levels in the garden allows the connecting walkway to double as a seating area, echoing the traditional Japanese engawa (veranda). This outdoor sanctuary provides a place for contemplation and connection, a rare luxury in a dense urban environment. The Fan House stands as a unique expression of cross-cultural influences, blending Japanese tradition with modern design principles. By incorporating natural elements, embracing a minimalist aesthetic, and prioritizing functionality, a home was created that is both visually stunning and deeply personal, a true reflection of the homeowners' values and aspirations. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a mundane space into a sanctuary, promoting well-being and fostering a sense of connection and belonging. The Fan House is more than just a dwelling; it is a "Friendly Home" that celebrates the beauty of simplicity, the power of symbolism, and the enduring appeal of Japanese aesthetics.
