I. Conceptual Framework
Co-developed by China鈥檚 Ministry of Education and Hainan Province, the 鈥婬ainan Lingshui Li'an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone鈥� represents the nation鈥檚 pioneering initiative to integrate multiple universities for Sino-foreign collaborative education. Breaking away from traditional isolated campus planning, the zone adopts a 鈥嬧�嬧�渓arge-shared + small-college鈥濃�嬧�� model, where core facilities鈥攊ncluding the library, sports complexes, dormitories, and dining halls鈥攁re shared across the entire academic community. Positioned along the campus鈥檚 central axis, the 鈥婰ibrary (International Learning Center)鈥嬧�� serves as one of nine Phase I landmark projects. Designed to accommodate 30,000 students from diverse global academic backgrounds within an 80,000-square-meter structure, it addresses the dual challenges of functional complexity and cultural inclusivity.
II. Design Solutions
1. 鈥婱ultifunctional Cultural Hub鈥�
Reimagining the traditional book-centric library, the Learning Center evolves into a 鈥媍ultural hybrid鈥� that fosters interdisciplinary interaction. Five petal-shaped volumes house a multifunctional hall, lecture theaters, book caf茅s, and auxiliary facilities, creating a dynamic ecosystem for academic and social exchange. Responding to the site鈥檚 15-meter elevation differential, the design divides the terrain into three north-south terraces. By integrating entrances at varying elevations with functional zoning, the project achieves optimal earthwork balance, streamlines circulation, and complies with fire safety regulations.
2. 鈥媀ertical Shared Learning Networks鈥�
Embracing the growing role of informal learning, the architecture redefines spatial pedagogy. Stepped rooftop terraces form 鈥媜pen-air collaborative gardens, while a 鈥嬧�嬧�淔orest Reading Room鈥濃�嬧�� seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor study environments. Landscape design harmonizes with natural topography, using tiered greenbelts and plant islands to create interconnected 鈥媏co-learning hubs. These spaces encourage spontaneous interaction, blending education with ecological engagement.
3. 鈥婥ultural Identity: Hainan Blossom鈥�
The architecture embodies Hainan鈥檚 educational vision through the abstracted form of the provincial flower, 鈥媌ougainvillea. Its layered, upward-curving silhouette symbolizes the fusion of local heritage and global innovation. The fa莽ade integrates two cultural narratives: vertical louvers encode the rhythmic patterns of Hainan folk songs, while ground-floor fenestration reinterprets the Li ethnic group鈥檚 鈥婫angong bird totem鈥攁 symbol of prosperity鈥攖hrough contemporary geometric motifs. This dual-layer symbolism transforms the building into a 鈥嬧�嬧�渕emory bank鈥濃�嬧�� that bridges tradition and modernity.
