I. Conceptual Framework
Co-developed by China’s Ministry of Education and Hainan Province, the Hainan Lingshui Li'an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone represents the nation’s pioneering initiative to integrate multiple universities for Sino-foreign collaborative education. Breaking away from traditional isolated campus planning, the zone adopts a “large-shared + small-college” model, where core facilities—including the library, sports complexes, dormitories, and dining halls—are shared across the entire academic community. Positioned along the campus’s central axis, the Library (International Learning Center) serves as one of nine Phase I landmark projects. Designed to accommodate 30,000 students from diverse global academic backgrounds within an 80,000-square-meter structure, it addresses the dual challenges of functional complexity and cultural inclusivity.
II. Design Solutions
1. Multifunctional Cultural Hub
Reimagining the traditional book-centric library, the Learning Center evolves into a cultural hybrid that fosters interdisciplinary interaction. Five petal-shaped volumes house a multifunctional hall, lecture theaters, book cafés, and auxiliary facilities, creating a dynamic ecosystem for academic and social exchange. Responding to the site’s 15-meter elevation differential, the design divides the terrain into three north-south terraces. By integrating entrances at varying elevations with functional zoning, the project achieves optimal earthwork balance, streamlines circulation, and complies with fire safety regulations.
2. Vertical Shared Learning Networks
Embracing the growing role of informal learning, the architecture redefines spatial pedagogy. Stepped rooftop terraces form open-air collaborative gardens, while a “Forest Reading Room” seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor study environments. Landscape design harmonizes with natural topography, using tiered greenbelts and plant islands to create interconnected eco-learning hubs. These spaces encourage spontaneous interaction, blending education with ecological engagement.
3. Cultural Identity: Hainan Blossom
The architecture embodies Hainan’s educational vision through the abstracted form of the provincial flower, bougainvillea. Its layered, upward-curving silhouette symbolizes the fusion of local heritage and global innovation. The façade integrates two cultural narratives: vertical louvers encode the rhythmic patterns of Hainan folk songs, while ground-floor fenestration reinterprets the Li ethnic group’s Gangong bird totem—a symbol of prosperity—through contemporary geometric motifs. This dual-layer symbolism transforms the building into a “memory bank” that bridges tradition and modernity.
