Located in rainy Keelung, this over-40-year-old residence has long suffered from dampness and wall decay. The homeowners, who embrace a free-spirited lifestyle and place great importance on their dog's safety, desired a space free of sharp edges to prevent injuries during play. In response to the homeowners' unique aesthetic and practical needs, the designer focused on "curved forms" and "open circulation" to reinvigorate the old house.
The renovation began with the removal of outdated partitions to create a seamless, open layout. The entrance, positioned by a window, connects the living room, study, and dining area; its light-toned, open design allows natural light and fresh air to circulate freely. With the added consideration of the dog’s epilepsy, all storage units and wall corners feature curved designs to minimize collision risks.
Within the open plan, a large central island becomes the home's focus, integrating cooking, entertaining, and display functions. In the central area, where natural light is limited, a brick-red feature wall creates a striking contrast, enhanced by acrylic light columns and irregular decorative elements that form an artistic visual centerpiece.
